Despite Christmas only being a short time away we have had organisations contacting us with new opportunities. Usually it takes a little time from applying to volunteer to actually starting so it may be good idea to apply now if you are thinking about volunteering in the New Year. See below for some ideas:-

Beccles Sea Cadets:
Looking for someone to help with costing and applications to funding bodies regarding the proposal of a new building. They are also looking for Committee Members and volunteers to help with transporting young people to events. They have also been asked to take on the running of Beccles Duck Race and to do this need a working committee. Tasks include approaching sponsors, selling ducks (from around March) and creating new ideas in which they can promote the Duck Race. There are 1000 ducks to be cleaned up following the race held this year.

Still in the Beccles area, Ringsfield & Weston Community Council & Village Hall Committee is looking for a Minutes Secretary to prepare and distribute agendas and meeting papers, correspondence as directed by the Council, taking notes and preparing minutes of the meetings which are held monthly.

Out & About has several opportunities:
1) Volunteers to supporting young children who are disabled to take part in leisure activities;
2) Charity Box collector- going and finding locations willing to place a box in their venue, emptying and banking of the proceeds.
3) Volunteers willing to be a part of a pool taking part in street/supermarket collections;
4) for the Friends Groups - arranging fundraising events, e.g. quiz nights, coffee mornings, putting up posters, giving talks to groups.

British Red Cross is currently recruiting volunteers to help out in the Accident & Emergency department at James Paget Hospital, Gorleston. Tasks may include:

helping with refreshments
taking presciptions to the pharmacy
directing or escorting patients to other departments of the hospital
signposting to other British Red Cross services and other agencies
going to the hospital shop for papers and magazines.

THE ARCHWAY
Looking for supporters to join the volunteer team to providing services at the drop in for marginalised adults in Kirkley, particularly female supporters.

FEN PARK FRIENDS
Actively recruiting volunteers to help with clearing up the community areas, be part of a team planning and planting on the wildlife island in the park lake, weekend gardening group planting and routine maintenance and gardening experts to advise the volunteer teams.

SHARE IN SUFFOLK
(Promoting parental involvement and engagement in their child's learning at school and at home). Support assistants to help with the Share Activity Sessions in schools. Volunteers can also be involved in planning, researching and developing sessions.

Volunteering opportunities include meal-time supporters ( making sure patients are prepared for lunch and encouraging patients to eat ), patient experience trackers ( talking to patients and helping them to complete a short questionnaire ) and admin support ( moving records, photocopying, errands, assisting patients to various depts/clinics, filing, putting together information packs).

R.N.I.B. (Royal National Institute for the Blind)
is looking for volunteer Telephone Group Facilitators to facilitate a weekly telephone group offering blind and partially sighted people the opportunity to socialise with others. This is a home based volunteering opportunity - no telephone costs will be incurred.

TREE TOPS PRESCHOOL & OUT OF HOURS CLUB
would like volunteers to be part of their management committee to be involved in fundraising, policy writing and reviewing, Health & Safety and staff leadership.

STRADBROKE COURT DAY CENTRE
need volunteers to help with serving teas and coffees, washing up, loading the dishwasher, setting tables and assisting with activities.

CROSSROADS CARE WAVENEY
would be interested in a volunteer willing to help with lunchtime cooking and also volunteer drivers.

YOUNG INFOLINK
Currently recruiting volunteers aged 14 - 19 (up to 24 years for persons with special needs) to encourage more people to access services and engage in activities that help to improve family life. Full training given.

Anglia Care Trust is recruiting volunteers for their Appropriate Adult Service and for their Advocacy and Independent Visitor Service.
Appropriate Adult Service tasks involve supporting young people and people with mental health issues or learning disabilities whilst they are in police custody. Volunteers should have a mature attitude and a patient and understanding approach. A driving licence and own transport is essential.
The Advocacy and Independent Visitor Service assists "looked after" young people with their personal development by offering information, advice and support in order to make their views known to people making decisions about their care. Again a current driving licence and access to transport is essential.

Museums in the area including Broad House, Royal Naval Patrol Service, Maritime Museum, Lowestoft War Memorial Museum, Beccles & District and Halesworth & District who are looking for volunteer stewards. Most are open until the end of September so this is an ideal opportunity for someone who only wants to volunteer during the summer months.

Sunday 21st June is the day for volunteers interested in marine conservation to help with a litter clean up and beach survey on Pakefield Beach. Times are 10.00am - 12 noon and 2.00 - 4.00pm.

Change of opening times in Beccles

As from 1st May 2009 the Volunteer Centre will be operating at Beccles Town Hall on the first Wednesday of every month. We hope this will not discourage anyone in the Beccles and Bungay areas from volunteering and we look forward to hearing from you at our Lowestoft office, telephone 562299.

Suffolk Befriending Scheme is looking for volunteers to befriend people with learning disabilities. Their profiles are:-

Lady, aged 44, who enjoys walking along the seafront, boat trips and playing board games;
Lady, aged 57, who enjoys chatting over a cuppa and going to the theatre;
Lady, aged 51. Her hobbies are crochet and painting.
Man. aged 60, who likes going out for meals and bowling.
Man, aged 54, who enjoys ten-pin bowling, gardening and cooking.
Man, aged 29, who is interested in all forms of transport and loves listening to music.
Young man, aged 18, who would like to join someone taking a dog for a walk.

All out of pocket expenses are paid. CAN YOU HELP?

Lowestoft & Waveney Samaritans still need a publicity officer. One of the tasks would be to target businesses to raise funds.
